Hong Kong Cafe 香港茶餐廳 in Monterey Park is frequently praised for its authentic Hong Kong-style atmosphere, featuring distinctive diner-style decor and nostalgic street sign elements that resonate well with patrons seeking a genuine Cha Chaan Teng experience. The food generally receives positive feedback for its flavors that closely mirror traditional Hong Kong cuisine, with popular items like milk tea, yuenyeung, baked pork chop, and pineapple buns often highlighted. Service quality is commonly described as friendly and helpful, though some reviewers note the high volume of customers frequently leads to long wait times and limited seating comfort. While most dishes are well-received, a few menu items occasionally fall short of expectations. A minor critique involves the presence of Simplified Chinese characters in the decor, which some feel slightly detracts from the authentic ambiance. Overall, the cafe is valued for its vibrant setting and nostalgic culinary offerings despite occasional crowding challenges.

The inside of Hong Kong Cafe alone is worth a visit. This cafe is tucked into an unassuming corner in the Atlantic Times Square - we almost missed it when looking for it on our first visit. I love the diner-style aesthetic along with all the unique decorations. Hanging signs not only give a nod to Hong Kong’s famous street signs but also highlight featured menu items. I’ve come several times now with my coworker. Service is usually quick and efficient. You may have to flag down a server every once in a while. Just try to avoid being seated the back corner. The menu is large and enticing, so I try something new every time. The menu includes Hong Kong diner classics such as the spam and egg sandwich as well as family style dishes. My coworker, however, is loyal to the ribeye steak with black pepper sauce. The steak is fatty and tender and the sauce is very yummy. Aside from the steak, the cafe does classic dishes like orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp, and beef chow fun very well. The orange chicken stood out to me because of its unique texture. It’s sliced very thinly. Each piece is so crunchy and fatty, it’s like eating chicken skin. I’m also quite fond of the sweet and sour fish. And I was in awe of the Australian Wagyu Beef Fried Rice. The wagyu was so soft and tender. The rice was so buttery and delicious. It’s a very indulgent dish. Hong Kong Cafe is more than just a meal - it’s an immersive experience. An international trip right at home.

Amazing food, tastes just like home. Great service as well with friendly and helpful staff. The only reservation I have for this place is that there are too many Simplified Chinese Characters displayed in the decorations which slightly takes away the authenticity because it’s supposed to be a Hong Kong styled restaurant.

Great food, service & atmosphere. Closest I’ve experienced to real HK food. Enjoyed lamb stew with mushrooms & bean curd and baked pork chop in tomato sauce. Rice rolls were however mediocre at best.

The milk tea and Yuen-yang (1/2 tea+1/2 coffee) is authentic. The French toast with extra peanut sauce has great texture, and that extra egg added to the toast gives another notch to the taste. Stir fry beef ho-fu n is nicely make and the chef put in a nice portion of beef that I have never seen from any other HK restaurants. Pineapple bun is also tasty too. They also serve traditional dining dishes with great quality. The decorations really brings back a lot of good old memories from HK. One surprise and great experience is that the waiter was happily accommodating my dog for in-door dining, which is a huge plus to the dining experience.

This place is extremely busy and the wait for a table is essentially an hour. If you enjoy mediocre food and minimalist service, this is a must visit when you are in town. Situated in the busiest part of Alhambra, the metropolis of a mall has this restaurant poking out from the edge. There is no waiting area except for a few chairs outside under the hot son. The inside has no AC so it could be extremely hot and uncomfortable. The wait staff has a nonchalant attitude and the dishes come in at random times. If the food is amazing, then the rest of the suffering might be part of the experience but it was just okay. Maybe the heat in the restaurant cancelled out any desire to enjoy the food. Your miles may vary.

This place is great, our favorite HK Cafe location. Parking is easy in the underground structure. Decor is beautiful and perfectly themed. Service is fine, as best as you can expect from this place. They’ll definitely get you what you need without any attitude. We’ve been here plenty of times and there’s always a lot to take home. The best way I can explain it is it’s an excellent place when you want good “junk” food. Not to say the food is bad, it’s something to satisfy your cravings and Greta portions. It’s one of those places that brings you back and gives you lots of food, may not be the best quality, but you get your moneys worth. You will not leave feeling like you’re still hungry. I would say the one negative is that sometimes food comes out very spread apart. For example we got our fried rice last, some time after we had received our previous dish. Food wise, see the pictures themselves, portions are great. I think this places is done family style, lots of food the share Love the salted pepper squid, the portions are perfect to share as most of their dishes are here. We normally like the grilled pork chop plate, this time we opted to try the fried pork chop, and it didn’t miss. Tastes great, but I’ll stick to the grilled version as there are a lot of fried dishes in their offerings Honey walnut shrimp is good, could probably use a bit more of the mayonnaise for that creamy texture, but the flavors are good I really enjoyed the salted fish and chicken fried rice. Not overly salty and a good balance. I believe the lemon tea is refillable This is our go to when we can’t think of places to eat and just want something that can satisfy everyone’s cravings.
